This standard covers the material and application requirements for coal-tar enamel protective coatings for steel water pipe to be installed under normal or average construction conditions in any soils or aboveground. Except as otherwise provided for specials or field repairs, all coatings covered by this standard shall be shop applied by mechanical means. An appendix has been added to this standard to provide additional exterior protective measures for steel water pipe to be installed under unusual construction conditions such as those encountered in the construction of submarine lines, casing pipe, and river crossings, and in exceptionally rocky areas. The purchaser, when inviting bids, shall specify his requirements for protective coating by referring to the designation of this standard, and if additional protection is required, to the appropriate section and subdivision of the appendix. In addition, the purchaser shall supply certain detailed information covering each individual contract in accordance with Sec. 1.3 of this standard.
Description
The principle changes in this version are as follows: the scope has been changed to define the class of material used and its areas of application; the basic minimum coating has been changed to provide for a pipe which is primed, enameled, single wrapped with asbestos felt, and finished with whitewash or kraft paper wrap; a grade of coal-tar enamel suited to low temperature applications has been re-established; laboratory and field test procedures have been modified and clarified; the use of glass mops for hand application is now permitted; a limit on the loss of penetration during heating has been included; and, a section on affidavit of compliance has been added.
