C203-73: AWWA Standard for Coal-Tar Protective Coatings and Linings for Steel Water Pipelines--Enamel and Tape--Hot Applied (PDF)
SKU: STC_0073879-PDF
This standard provides for protective exterior coatings with hot-applied coal-tar enamel and hot-applied coal-tar tape for steel water pipelines installed in all soils under average or normal construction conditions, and for protective interior linings of steel water pipelines with hot-applied coal-tar enamel when the temperature of the water in the pipe will not exceed 90°F and the rate of flow will be sufficient to prevent stagnation. Section 2 covers hot-applied coal-tar enamel and its application to pipe, special sections, connections, and fittings. Section 3 covers hot-applied coal-tar tape and its application to special sections, connections, and fittings.
Description
The major revisions to this edition of the standard are as follows: the title has been changed to show that the standard has been revised to include hot-applied tape protective coatings; the foreword has been revised to provide, in addition to the history of the standard, this listing of major revisions and a section on "Information Regarding Use of This Standard;" all sections in AWWA Standard C203-66 having reference to corrosion protection of aboveground structures have been removed from the standard, and it now describes protective coatings for underground steel pipelines only, and corrosion protection practice for aboveground structures will become the subject of a new AWWA standard; Section 2 requires that both primer and coal-tar enamel shall be from the same manufacturer; all test methods in Sec. 2 have been rewritten in the direct rather than the indirect form; Section 2 now allows the use of nonperforated or perforated asbestos-coal- tar-saturated felt, either type may be nonreinforced or reinforced with parallel fiberglass yarns, and requirements for thickness and tear strength have been added, and guidance is provided for the prevention of "gassing;" under Appendix A, special attention has been called to the requirement that, when the coal-tar-enamel, fibrous-glass mat, and bonded asbestos-felt wrap system are being used, the mat must not be pulled through the hot enamel to the metal surface; under Sec. 2, a maximum limit has been established for the softening point of coal-tar enamels; former Appendix Sec. A2.1- Kraft Paper has been relocated to Sec. 2.12 of the standard; under Sec. 2, the finish coat of kraft paper or whitewash has been made optional with the applicator, unless otherwise specified by the purchaser; Section 3 is new and provides for hot-applied coal-tar coating in tape form for the exterior surfaces of special sections, connections, and fittings for steel water pipe; and, under Appendix A, Sec. A2.1- Fibrous-Glass Mat has been enlarged to include requirements for appearance, weight, thickness, trapezoidal tear strength, breaking strength, pliability, and porosity.
