The standard was first made in 1971, and received ANSI approval on June 1977. Also given is a brief history of the standard, the major revisions and information regarding the use of the standard. Part A of this standard provides minimum requirements for line shaft vertical turbine pump utilizing discharge column pipe up to and including 16 in. (400 mm) in size. The standard deals with a pump configuration up to and including the driver. Only electric motors are referred to as prime movers. Purchasers who intend to use the pumps for pumping liquids other than clear, cold water should modify the requirements after consultation with pump manufacturers.

Part B of this standard provides minimum requirements for submersible vertical turbine pumps utilizing a 7-1/4 horsepower motor or larger. Purchasers who intend to use the pumps for pumping liquids other than clear, cold water should modify requirements after consultation with pump manufacturers. Included are sections on the following: definitions, standard nomenclature, order form, inspection and certification by manufacturer, information supplied by bidder, sanitary codes, specifications of the submersible motor, submersible cable, surface plate, strainer, discharge pipe, pump bowls, impellers, pump motor coupling, engineering data on the discharge pipe, discharge friction loss, discharge elbow head loss, and various factory inspections and tests. Appendix A contains information on the field testing of vertical turbine pumps and Appendix B contains suggested specification form for the purchase of vertical turbine pumps.
