D105-80: AWWA Standard for Disinfection of Water Storage Facilities (PDF)

The standard covers the material, facility preparation, application of disinfectant to the interior surfaces of water storage facilities, and sampling and testing for the coliform bacteria. All new storage facilities shall be disinfected before they are placed in service. All storage facilities taken out of service for inspecting, painting, cleaning, or other activity which might lead to contamination of the water shall be disinfected before they are returned to service. Included are sections on the following: references, affidavit of compliance, cleaning, forms of chlorine disinfection including liquid chlorine, sodium hypochlorite, calcium hypochlorite, alternative methods of chlorination, bacteriological sampling and testing. The appendix contains information and a table on the disposal of heavily chlorinated water.
