Corrosion Control Theory & Treatment Certificate Program

Online: EL289 self-paced eLearning series

EL289 includes three individual self-paced eLearning courses.

Objectives

  • Sources and Processes of Corrosion: Name materials which are sources of lead or copper release, explain electrochemical processes that cause corrosion, and interpret Eh/pH (Pourbaix) and solubility diagrams.
  • Factors Influencing Metal Release: Recall physical and water quality factors influencing metal release and apply corrosion principles to recognize how metal is released from materials commonly used in distribution systems and premise plumbing.
  • Corrosion Control Treatment (CCT): Identify CCT options to minimize corrosivity of treated water toward various metals, explain correct usage of corrosion indices, and outline major aspects of a corrosion control program.
  • Data and Analysis for CCT: Identify necessary data to support CCT decisions, describe key considerations and techniques for analyzing data, and determine when it is appropriate to initiate or revisit CCT.
  • Evaluating and Implementing CCT: Recognize source or treatment changes that warrant a CCT evaluation, identify possible water quality impacts, decide on appropriate corrosion control studies, and explain methods and tools for evaluating CCT.
  • Demonstration Testing and Criteria: Describe differences and considerations in demonstration testing methods, identify additional criteria when selecting CCT, and define steps for implementing CCT.
  • Effectiveness and Monitoring: Recall tools and considerations for evaluating CCT effectiveness and monitor progress to ensure the effectiveness of corrosion control measures.

Description

With the announcements of upcoming Lead & Copper Rule Revisions, water utilities need targeted and credible resources to help craft the best lead reduction plan for their specific community, including strategies for corrosion control. This training guides participants through a decision process that experience has shown to be successful in developing corrosion control strategies.

The courses included in the Certificate Program are:

  1. Corrosion Control Theory and Treatment Options (EL285)
  2. Assessing Need for A Corrosion Control Evaluation (EL286)
  3. Performing A Corrosion Control Evaluation (EL287)

This certificate program is non-refundable.

Certificates of Completion

9 Hours (3 separate courses)

*AWWA will issue a Certificate of Completion upon successful completion of each individual course within the Certificate Program. However, this does not guarantee that your state agency will recognize or award you. It is the individual's responsibility, before registering for any continuing education credit program, to contact the appropriate licensing agency.
