Description

There are over two million Americans who live without running water and basic plumbing. This session features a review of the domestic Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) sector and how Community Engineering Corps volunteers help bridge the infrastructure access gap in the US.

In the international development realm, water, sanitation, and hygiene (or WASH) are often understood as problems that folks in low-income or otherwise resource-constrained countries face. While these are very real issues in other countries, they are also realities for folks who live, work, and raise families within the United States. There are over 2 million Americans who live without running water and basic plumbing, and Black, Latinx, and Native American households are disproportionately impacted by this lack of adequate infrastructure. This challenge presents a unique opportunity for technical professionals to volunteer to work hand-in-hand with these communities on the development of solutions that help them secure their right to safe, accessible, and affordable drinking water and sanitation services.?

Community Engineering Corps is a partnership between the American Water Works Association, Engineers Without Borders-USA, and the American Society of Civil Engineers that utilizes a co-creation model in which underserved and overburdened community-based organizations can leverage the expertise and humanity found within our volunteer network to gain access to improved infrastructure in their communities.

This session features a review of the state of the domestic WASH sector and discusses how Community Engineering Corps volunteers help bridge the infrastructure and water access gap that underserved communities face. With access to Community Engineering Corps’ network of volunteers, our client communities are closer to obtaining funding for the capital improvement projects that are essential to ensure safe water and sanitation for their constituents as they continue to grow and thrive.
