Description

The history of the standard, major revisions, and information regarding the use of the standard are provided in the foreword. Section one of the standard presents the scope of and references for the standard and discusses the record of compliance. Section two addresses forms of chlorine for disinfection, including liquid chlorine, sodium hypochlorite, and calcium hypochlorite. Section three of the standard presents the basic disinfection procedure. Section four describes preventive and corrective measures during construction to assure that a water main and its appurtenances are thoroughly clean for the final disinfection by chlorination. Methods of chlorination discussed in section five include the following: tablet method, continuous-feed method, and slug method. Final flushing is discussed in section six. Section seven covers bacteriological tests. Redisinfection is discussed in section eight of the standard. Disinfection procedures when cutting into or repairing existing mains are presented in section nine, and section ten describes a special procedure for caulked tapping sleeves. Appendices to the standard discuss chlorine residual testing and disposal of heavily chlorinated water.
