Fluosilicic acid (hydrofluosilicic acid) is one of among six fluoride compounds presently being added to water in order to reduce the incidence of dental caries.

Description

The American Water Works Association has promulgated standards for three of the compounds presently being used. Information regarding the number of public water supplies using these different methods is included. The standard was first approved July 1954 and the revision approved June 1971. Also included is a brief history of the standard and a discussion of fluosilicic acid, care in handling, the effect of acid concentration on costs and feeding equipment and major revisions. The standard covers fluosilicic acid for use in treatment of potable water supplies. Included are sections on: general information, affidavit of compliance or certified analysis, rejection, material specifications of impurities and chemical composition, sampling, packing and shipping, marking, and various testing methods for fluosilicic acid content, specific gravity method, hydrogen titration method, determination of free acid, and heavy metals.
